Black History Month honors the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Today’s African American Historical Figure:
Cowboys: One in four cowboys was Black, despite the stories told in popular books and movies. In fact, it's believed that the real “Lone Ranger” was inspired by an African American man named Bass Reeves. Reeves had been born a slave but escaped West during the Civil War where he lived in what was then known as Indian Territory. He eventually became a Deputy U.S. Marshal, was a master of disguise, an expert marksman, had a Native American companion, and rode a silver horse. His story was not unique however.
In the 19th century, the Wild West drew enslaved Blacks with the hope of freedom and wages. When the Civil War ended, freedmen came West with the hope of a better life where the demand for skilled labor was high. These African Americans made up at least a quarter of the legendary cowboys who lived dangerous lives facing weather, rattlesnakes, and outlaws while they slept under the stars driving cattle herds to market.

The Legend of Bass Reeves by Gary Paulsen
Master storyteller and author Gary Paulsen writes a both true and fictional account of the most valiant marshal in the west.
Many "heroic lawmen" of the Wild West, familiar to us through television and film, were actually violent scoundrels and outlaws themselves. But of all the sheriffs of the frontier, one man stands out as a true hero: Bass Reeves. He was the most successful Federal Marshal in the US in his day. True to the mythical code of the West, he never drew his gun first. He brought hundreds of fugitives to justice, was shot at countless times, and never hit. Bass Reeves was a black man, born into slavery. And though the laws of his country enslaved him and his mother, when he became a free man he served the law, with such courage and honor that he became a legend. Pick up a copy of the Legend of Bass Reeves in the library today!

Battle of the Books Championship
The library hosted the Battle of the Books Championship yesterday and as expected it was an exciting and close battle to claim the top spot. In the end, it was the 8th Grade team known as the Return of the Readers that claimed the top spot by only two points! Congratulations to Asher Kearl, Kyle Rassmussen, DJ Hartenstein and Mason Doud for claiming the KMS Championship for this year. They were challenged closely by second place finishers, the Dragon Scrolls, made up of teammates Lucy Kearl, Mia Chen, Charlotte Matzen and Evelyn Sullivan. Honorable mentions go to the teams that tied for third yesterday which were the 7th grade teams of Inside Joke and The Champions. Mr. Gaskell and Ms. Arps want to thank all the students that participated in this year's Battle of the Books season! Please check the library's Google Classroom for an end of season survey and information about claiming a free copy of one of this year's Battle Books.
